Sabbath means quit. Stop. Take a break. Cool it. The word itself has nothing devout or holy in it. It is a word about time, denoting our nonuse of it, what we usually call wasting time. It is not a day when we do anything useful.”

Eugene Peterson,
Working the Angels

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning -- the sixth day ... on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”

“Sabbath” -- What is it?

Exodus 12

Deuteronomy 5

If my private world is in order, it will be because I have chosen to press Sabbath peace into the rush and routine of my daily life in order to find the rest God prescribed for Himself and all of humanity.”

Gordon MacDonald,
Ordering Your Private World

Mark 6
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that htey did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and some rest.”

Matthew 11
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
