In the days of Jesus, the Sabbath observance had become largely external and formal. Most of the spiritual leaders of Israel were more concerned with trying to keep the letter of the Law of Moses rather than the spirit of the Law when it came to the problems of human needs.

1. The Problem with trying to be "Religious"!Luke 6:1-5

A. We remain hungry on the Sabbath

B. We forget the Sabbath was made for man

C. We forget The Sabbath is a Life of Resting in Jesus

2. The Problem with trying to be "Religious"!Luke 6:6-11

A. We remain handicapped because of the Sabbath

B. We are unable to do good for each other on the Sabbath

C. Legalism causes "hardness of the heart."

There remains for us a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for the one who has entered his rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest.Hebrews 4:9-11
