Read the passage twice (or as many times as you would like) and consider the following questions:
1. What does it mean, “...you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world...” (v. 20)? Look back to Colossians 2.13-14.
2. What does Paul say that human commands and teachings provide (v. 22)?

Resisting vs. Fleeing Often Christians confuse those things which they are to resist, and which temptations they are simply to flee — get away from. Many people flee what they should resist, and resist what they should flee. Using a concordance, look up the word “flee” then the word “resist”. What do you observe? | |||||
4. What does Paul mean, “the wrath of God is coming” (v. 6)? See also Ephesians 5.6 and Romans 2.5, 4.15, 5.9.
5. What are the characteristics of your “old self” (v. 2.20-23, 3.3-9)? Keep this in mind to compare with next weeks characteristics of new self.
Life Response
1. What basic principles of the world do you find yourself succumbing to (2.20)? Why?
2. What characteristics of your old self do you struggle with (3.5-9)? What can you do about these struggles (3.1-4)? What can you believe differently about God?
Journal Question
If we died, and our life is now hidden with Christ in God (3.3), why is it often so hard to put to death “whatever belongs to your earthy nature” (3.5)? As you consider this question, read another translation of the same verse, “Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry“.
